2014 West Coast Conference — Day 1
Today, thousands gathered in Seattle for our 2014 West Coast Conference, Overcoming the World: Being a Christian in a Post-Christian Culture. For news and updates, please follow the official conference hashtag #ligcon on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Google+. Below is a summary and several highlights from today.
Today's Sessions
Big Brother Is Watching Your from R.C. Sproul Jr.
Our 2014 West Coast Conference began with Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. reading 1 Samuel 8. He reminded us that our problem is not economic or political—it's theological. We do not need to fear the state. "Big Brother" is indeed watching us, but our "Big Brother" is King Jesus and His Kingdom will have no end.
Sexual Devolution from Albert Mohler
Dr. Albert Mohler then briefly surveyed five "revolutions" that paved the way for the sexual "devolution" and sexual anarchy that we see in the modern age. He warned us not to redefine what Scripture calls sin as "not sin" because to do so is to mislead people about their need for Jesus. Driven by love and compassion the church must continue to speak the truth and proclaim the good news of the gospel.
War of the Worldviews from R.C. Sproul Jr.
Our evening sessions began with Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr.'s message, "The War of the Worldviews." Dr. Sproul Jr. corrected the idea that education will win this war. Scripture informs us that man doesn't need to be educated, he needs to be rescued. The problem isn't our lack of knowledge, it's our sin. The only solution is the mercy of God and that's what the church needs to be telling the world.
To the World, Folly and a Stumbling Block from Steven Lawson
Dr. Steven Lawson closed the first day of our West Coast Conference by walking us through 1 Corinthians 1:22-24. Despite the world craving a certain kind of message, the church is called to faithfully preach Christ and Him crucified. The world considers it foolishness, but in truth there is no greater display of God's wisdom than in the cross of Christ. It is this message that we are to preach for it is the power of God for salvation.
