When did you first encounter the holiness of God?
I remember when I began to truly understand the Lord’s majestic character. It happened while I was in college. By then, I had already gained some appreciation for the enriching biblical truth of Reformed theology. But everything changed in 1994 when Jennifer, my girlfriend at the time (and now my wife), gave me The Holiness of God by Dr. R.C. Sproul for my twenty-first birthday.

In the book, R.C. leads us into God’s throne room through his vivid exposition of Isaiah 6—the foundations quaking at their Creator’s presence, the angels’ anthem to their thrice-holy King, the prophet’s anguished cry: “I am undone!” With Isaiah, we come to realize that the Lord is immeasurably grander, purer, and more highly exalted than we have yet known.
An awakening to the holiness of God transforms lives. Not until we understand who God is in all His transcendent greatness do we begin to see who we are by stark contrast. With our sin thus exposed, we realize we’re left entirely to God’s mercy. So we bow in awe of His gracious salvation, eager to declare to others who our great God is.

R.C. founded Ligonier because he saw a profound need for people, both inside and outside the church, to know the God of Scripture. He identified the great scandal of the time in which we live when he wrote, “The God of popular religion is not holy.”
A stark emptiness oppresses societies that have lost their awe and wonder at the majesty of God. R.C. said: “Ours is a day when people feel a sense of the absence of God. . . . We feel abandoned, thrown into the waters of a hostile or, even worse, indifferent universe. We seem locked into a world from which there is no exit, no stairway to the stars.”
Scripture reveals a better way. Yet unbiblical and anemic views of God are not a problem only outside the church. Liberal churches constantly erode the foundations of the truth. Dr. Sproul countered this progressive trend and founded the teaching fellowship of Ligonier to help Christians understand who God is and reorient their entire lives around the Word of God.
R.C. said it best: “If God is the Creator of the entire universe, then it must follow that He is the Lord of the whole universe. . . . That means that no part of my life must be outside of His lordship. His holy character has something to say about economics, politics, athletics, romance—everything with which we are involved.”
I’m aware of no other Christian ministry so singularly focused on proclaiming, teaching, and defending God’s holiness in all its fullness. The truth of God’s holiness is woven into all of Ligonier’s discipleship resources to help Christians grow in their knowledge of God and of themselves. And this focus drives Ligonier’s global, multi-generational teaching outreach: We are seeking a worldwide awakening to the character of God.
By God’s grace, global awakening takes place one life at a time through the work of the Holy Spirit. Praise God that we regularly hear how the truth is transforming the lives of men, women, and children worldwide. For instance, Eduardo in Mexico recently told us:
